How can I support my dyslexic employees?
Most support is simple, low-cost and benefits everyone in the workplace. Full guidance is available in our Guide for Employers.
1. Create an Inclusive Culture
Promote open conversations, provide dyslexia awareness training, and encourage senior leaders to model inclusion. This helps reduce stigma and increases disclosure.
2. Talk With the Individual
Every dyslexic employee is different. Ask what works for them and, if needed, arrange a Workplace Needs Assessment to identify personalised adjustments.
3. Put Simple Adjustments in Place
Small changes can make a big difference:
- Provide key information in advance
- Reduce distractions or offer quiet space
- Allow extra time for reading/writing-heavy tasks
- Use clear, straightforward written communication
4. Use Assistive Technology
Built-in tools like dictation, screen readers and mind-mapping software help employees work more confidently and efficiently. Offer training so staff can get the most from them.
5. Make Recruitment & Training Accessible
Use clear language, offer materials ahead of time and avoid unnecessary timed tests. These changes help dyslexic applicants and improve accessibility for all.
