#MyDyslexiaStory - Noshaba Baig

Tuesday 18 October 2022

I was diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia in 2021. It was whilst I was working in HMRC where I was struggling in a fast-paced policy role. I have had challenges all my life, but they were never connected and almost ignored. My background is British Pakistani so culturally these subjects were taboo, and I received no support until the latter part of my life and career.

Finding my identity

I am proud to have dyslexia and dyscalculia as it gave me so much understanding about my identity and who I am.

You can achieve not just ‘with’ dyslexia but because of it!

I qualified as a barrister in law I am an international Mediator. I am a career coach assisting in over 400 applications. I am equality diversity and Inclusion subject matter expert. I was the first Asian, Muslim female Chair in the Home Office Race Network with over 4500 members.
I am subject matter expert in operational management and my enforcement career in immigration, customs and narcotics has shaped and challenged me as a strong resilient leader.
I have served in many countries as part of govt departments and this has provided me with skills I never knew I had.

My advice for someone who has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia:

Embrace that you are unique and use the power of what you are good at and stay with it. Do some soul research, and if you are diagnosed late, it will help guide you to where you need to be . Talk to other people, share it at work, home and let people help you.

I welcome dyslexia, I treat it as a gift and see myself a gamechanger. I provide solutions and I am naturally creative. I know I can help others just like me to take a stand and value their authentic self as a gift.
