Monday 3 October 2022

Your guide to Dyslexia Awareness Week 2022

Dyslexia Awareness Week (DAW) 2022 will run between Monday 3 October – Sunday 9 October this year. Today, we are kick-starting our jam-packed week of information, stories and inspiring content. The theme for this year’s DAW is ‘Breaking Through Barriers’, we have reached out and spoken to many people living with dyslexia giving them the opportunity to share how they feel they have broken through barriers in their lives.

We will be sharing the stories of:

  • Lizzie Acker, Great British Bake Off superstar
  • Theo Papthis, Dragons’ Den entrepreneur
  • Jake Posner, Dyslexia-focused Fashion Designer
  • Georgia Steel, Television Personality and Social Media Influencer
  • Lauren Duffy, Broadcast Journalist
  • Along with some of the inspiring stories from within our dyslexic community.

We know that dyslexia comes with many challenges, but people in our community can feel like their barriers are stronger than those who do not live with dyslexia or other neurodiversity. In the British Dyslexia Association’s 50th year, we want to celebrate those with dyslexia and ensure they feel seen, heard and accepted for who they are. We believe a society that embraces and promotes neurodiversity is kinder, more creative and empowered.

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Michelle Catterson says, "Dyslexia Awareness Week is a hugely important week in raising the profile for those with Dyslexia. The stigma around dyslexia unfortunately still exists for some, therefore talking openly about dyslexia is vital.

"We want to break down those barriers for those with Dyslexia to ensure that their voice is heard and they are supported. The work of the BDA is essential throughout the year; however, we use this important week in our calendar to push our vision further and help as many as we possibly can.

"For those with Dyslexia, either newly diagnosed or having lived and perhaps struggled with dyslexia for many years, hearing positive stories from those who have lived experience is of such importance.

"As we approach DAW I encourage and welcome all those with dyslexia to share their experience, to empower others and for everyone to know that you are not alone."
