If my child has dyslexia, will they automatically get extra time or other adjustments in exams?

The answer to this question is no. Exam Access Arrangements (EAAs) are awarded based on an individual’s needs as demonstrated within the educational setting. They are largely determined by what is considered the individual’s normal way of working in the classroom.

Where there is evidence of need, schools may carry out internal testing to confirm that an access arrangement is required and to provide the necessary evidence for the examination boards.

Exam Access Arrangements are organised by the school or college at the time the examinations take place. For GCSEs, A Levels, and many other qualifications, the required testing for exam applications must be completed internally by the school or college in advance of the exams. 

While a formal diagnosis or assessment report is not required to receive Exam Access Arrangements, such documentation may help parents or carers to discuss and support the need for their child to be considered for EAA assessment. It is also important to note that access arrangements can be granted without a diagnosis where there is clear evidence of need.
