Bake with Lizzie Acker

Monday 3 October 2022

Lizzie Acker rose to fame from her appearance on Season 12 of Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off. On the show, Lizzie shared that she was dyslexic and also has ADHD, she showed her neurodiversity through some of her bakes too.

Since GBBO she has gone on to openly share how dyslexia has affected her life and has advocated for neurodiversity to become more shared and accepted within society. Lizzie uses her social media channels to discuss dyslexia and ADHD as she believes the more we speak about it, the more we can create a neurodiverse-friendly culture for everyone.

The British Dyslexia Association teamed up with Lizzie to do some baking for Dyslexia Awareness Week 2022. We decided to create a bake sale favourite, Butterfly Cakes, but with a BDA blue and white twist.

While baking, Lizzie shared, “I think Dyslexia Awareness Week is so important because dyslexia is still surrounded by a load of really negative stereotypes like, ‘you’re thick’, ‘you’re lazy’ and it all needs to change.

“These [thoughts] are only going to change by awareness and it becoming more normalised and people talking about it more and people just knowing more about it!"

With the Great British Bake Off back on our screens, why not dust off the oven gloves and host a bake sale to support the BDA!

Whether you bake some old favourites or get creative; help raise awareness of Dyslexia at your school, workplace or in your community and raise some much-needed funds for the BDA at the same time.

Let us know that you’re hosting a bake sale by emailing fundraising@bdadyslexia.org.uk. As well as supporting your event, we can let you know how best to send any funds raised in to the BDA.
