For many people with dyslexia, school, revision and even the workplace feels like climbing a mountain—one that others seem to scale without struggle.
Last year, we highlighted the persistent and deeply concerning academic gap between dyslexic students and their peers. We also now know the deep mental health impact this has on so many young people. 59% of dyslexic children have been bullied or teased because of their dyslexia and 70% say their dyslexia makes them feel bad about themselves.
Sadly, we know these mental health needs carry on into adulthood, and into work. Our recent survey found 97% of dyslexic adults said they had experienced mental health issues at work, with 33% taking at least one day off because of it.
But it doesn't need to be this way. The BDA has put forward several recommendations to the Department of Education to ensure all classrooms provide inclusive and effective ‘dyslexia-friendly’ learning environments. To help make this a reality we continue to train educators, and workplaces to provide the support that dyslexic people need to thrive.
We are inviting YOU to help these dyslexic people conquer their own challenges by taking on an extraordinary virtual adventure!
