Who is it suitable for?

The school is designed for secondary teachers and TAs working with children and young people who want to be able to support dyslexic pupils within the classroom.

It will give you a greater understanding of the problems pupils with dyslexia face and appropriate methods and knowledge to help them.

It comprises four-full-days training (9:45am to 4pm) covering the content from our four core accredited courses, Supporting Dyslexic Learners, Reading, Spelling and Writing. Content includes…

Support Dyslexia Leaners:

  • What is meant by dyslexia and neurodiversity and the implications of co-occurring specific learning differences (SpLDs)
  • How the dyslexic profile may affect classroom behaviours
  • The potential of a well-constructed learner profile in informing teaching staff and boosting learner confidence
  • Easy to implement generic support strategies and tools
  • Building a dyslexia-friendly classroom and school, including any barriers to achieving this
  • Learner empowerment and self-advocacy


  • Skills demonstrated by skilled readers and the reading process
  • Why dyslexic learners have problems with reading, reading comprehension and learning phonics and how to support them
  • Difficulties involved in reading single words in the English language, from common irregulars to multi-syllabic vocabulary
  • Role of syllabification, morphology, chunking, and word derivation in tackling longer words
  • Encouraging children to develop a love of reading
  • Skills required by students in HE and consider what support is necessary


  • Skills and knowledge we use when spelling and why dyslexic learners have problems with spelling
  • Role played by phonological and articulatory awareness in learning phonics
  • Importance of multi-sensory methods in teaching spelling
  • Skills required for segmenting
  • Importance of understanding syllabification, morphology and affixation
  • Role of teaching word derivation
  • Transferring knowledge of spelling to longer pieces of writing


  • Skills used by a skilled writer and the difficulties that may be encountered by a dyslexic learner
  • Ways to support handwriting difficulties
  • Importance of vocabulary and oral language skills
  • Ways to generate ideas as a pre-writing activity
  • Planning as a crucial first step in essay writing and effectively structuring a piece of writing
  • Multiple drafts and formative feedback in developing metacognitive skills
  • Difficulties encountered by dyslexic learners in tackling exams and ways to support them

Attendance at the Summer School can also be used towards achievement of the following BDA awards:

Accredited Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention: Attending the Summer School will mean that if you wish to pursue becoming a fully qualified specialist dyslexia teacher, you will have completed the in-person training requirements. This is means that the remainder of the work required can be completed remotely, making it easier to fit around a busy term-time schedule.
