Well Done to First BDA L5 Candidate, Sandra Harris!

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) is delighted to announce that Sandra Harris has become the first candidate to complete the Level 5 Training Programme; Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention.

Helen Boden, BDA Chief Executive Officer, said,

“Well done to Sandra for being our first trainee to successfully complete the Level 5 course. We are pleased to hear she has gained so much from the experience and we are certain that many others will follow in her footsteps.”

For the past 10 years, Sandra has worked supporting university students, as a Specialist Mentor and One-to-One Study Skills Tutor. She works with adults with a range of needs, including Specific Learning Difficulties, Autism Spectrum Disorder, mental health and physical disabilities.

When asked about the course, Sandra said,

“The course has helped me enormously, and continues to do so, as I am able to reflect on certain aspects when different situations arise.

“I now have a deeper understanding of the theories underpinning dyslexia, multi-sensory learning and a toolkit of teaching ideas to draw upon.

“For example, I now feel far more knowledgeable about basic literacy and phonics and am able to use this to support students who are struggling with spellings and pronunciation, this is very useful for students on medical courses with complicated terminology.”

The BDA Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention provides training for individuals who have a professional interest in dyslexia for them to become informed practitioners and teachers. The courses are modular and flexible and are undertaken part time, through online or blended learning.

This is a BDA Approved Teacher/Approved Practitioner (BDA ATS/APS) accredited programme.

Candidates who have successfully passed the Level 5 certificate can apply to the BDA for ATS or APS status and professional membership.
