Contact Magazine - May 2018

The May 2018 issue of BDA Dyslexia Contact features 10-year-old dyslexic junior golfer, Evie Napier, on the front cover. Evie is a junior golfing star and has recently been awarded a BDA Young Person’s Achievement Award from the BDA this April, for her support and promotion of the BDA. CEO, Helen Boden opens the magazine with an introduction, covering the recent success of the IC, as well upcoming BDA events.

The News in Brief section of Contact covers the promotion of the See Dyslexia Differently animation, the BDA Handbook, and the Dyslexia Friendly Schools Good Practice Guide (2nd Edition). There’s also a congratulatory message to the first BDA Level 5 candidate, Sandra Harris.

The IC is prominent in this issue of Contact, with a spread dedicated to the IC titled ‘IC 2018 in Photos’, as well as a two-page review by Donna Stevenson. Sophie Irwin, Helpline Co-ordinator, writes a review on the book ‘Don’t Send Him in Tomorrow’, whilst Professor Victor van Daal writes a detailed academic review on M. S. Seidenberg’s ‘Language at the speed of sight: How we read, why so many can’t, and what can be done about it’.

Joanna Jeffery MBE, and founder of ‘trugs’ talks in detail about her dyslexia journey since childhood, and explains how she came to develop trugs, who recently exhibited at the BDA International Conference. Mike Strange, who grew up during the war, also tells us about his struggle with dyslexia throughout his life, and how he has written a book with dyslexia.

Two poems are featured from talented young boys, Oscar Hill and Freddie Kersel. The BDA NTC’s Abi James talks us through Windows 10 and Microsoft Office latest developments in their series of Enabling Technologies articles. The magazine closes with a summary of upcoming BDA events, conferences and webinars.
