Dyslexia awareness training with Split the Bills

Wednesday 31 July 2019

The BDA had the pleasure of spending some time with Split the Bills this week delivering some dyslexia awareness training for line managers.

Founded in 2011, Split the Bills is a fast paced, forward thinking company based in Sheffield. They have a small but perfectly formed team (including their Founder who is still very much involved) and have a great culture where every staff member is encouraged to be themselves and is supported by those around them. Their mission is to make life easy for students, landlords and businesses trying to navigate the complicated world of utility bills.

Split the Bills are an excellent example of an organisation supporting employees through assessments and then committing to building their internal knowledge base about dyslexia and neurodiversity in order to create a supportive environment where all staff can thrive. We hope that they will soon be undertaking the Dyslexia Smart Award so that they can gain public recognition of their inclusive culture.

Awareness training is a key part of the support process for employers. Having an understanding of dyslexia and neurodiversity:

  • Improves morale, motivation and efficiency
  • Reduces stress, making the environment healthier and reducing stress-related leave
  • Becoming dyslexia-friendly will help you make reasonable adjustments and meet the requirements of disability law (Equality Act)
  • Unlocks talent

What works for dyslexia works for everyone

“Teams solve problems faster when they’re more cognitively diverse. We need to encourage people to reveal and deploy their different modes of thinking. We need to make it safe to try things multiple ways. This means leaders will have to get much better at building their team’s sense of psychological safety.” - Harvard Business Review, 2017
