Ten percent of the workforce is dyslexic. That means ten percent of employees, customers, suppliers, colleagues, associates and employers are dyslexic.
The British Dyslexia Association has produced an essential guide to dyslexia for employers. It offers information and advice about dyslexia in the workplace, and how to make reasonable adjustments.
Under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) dyslexia is classed as a disability. Employers need to know how they can adjust current practices to support dyslexic individuals and ensure they are compliant with the DDA.
Developed as a result of seminars at which employers and employees shared their experiences of dyslexia at work, the guide is based on real situations experienced in the workplace.
The guide covers a range of issues, from the legislation surrounding dyslexia to the way the condition affects working styles, to job applications, who can provide advice and guidance and how technology can help a dyslexic employee. Each one comes with a CD-Rom version.
"Dyslexia friendly workplaces allow those with the condition to reach their potential and maximize their contribution." Said Carol Youngs, Acting Chief Executive of the BDA. ‘Sometimes the most minor adjustment can improve productivity for the whole organization.’
The BDA has produced an employer’s guide to dyslexia in conjunction with Sundial and Key4Learning.
The guide is priced at £20 plus postage and packaging and can be ordered online.
