BDA responds to Professor Julian Elliott's article in the TES

The BDA has responded to the article 'Dyslexia Myths and the Feel-bad Factor', which was written by Professor Julian Elliott and published in the Times Educational Supplement on Friday 2 September 2005.

The British Dyslexia Association has vigorously defended the reality of dyslexia, reinforcing the consensus from professionals working in the field on how to diagnose dyslexia and effectively intervene with support for dyslexic learners.

In responding to the wide media interest, the BDA drew on many examples from its membership and supporters to refute comprehensively Professor Elliott’s claims that dyslexia was nothing more than an emotional construct without scientific basis. BDA Chief Executive, Susan Tresman, and Policy and Media Director, Carol Youngs, responded to more than 50 media requests including:

• GMTV
• Radio 4 main news
• Radio 5 Live
• BBC news website
• Press Association
• BBC1 Extra
• LBC
• Radio London

BDA was also quoted on the TES front page and we have given statements to most of the national newspapers as well as regional press.

The BDA was able to present a very positive stance on the legitimacy of the condition and term dyslexia. We pointed to much evidence, such as the numbers of participants in the recent international Research to Practice conference 2004, the number of visitors to the BDA website and the raft of national legislation drafted to recognise dyslexia and how to support those who have it.

The BDA drew attention to the many programmes of effective intervention that had enabled dyslexics to realise their aspirations and potential. This was in response to Professor Elliott’s statement about those working in the dyslexia industry making claims for miracle cures.

In the TES article there is reference to the Channel 4 programme ‘The Dyslexia Myth’, which is due to be broadcast on 8 September 2005. The producer of this programme is in close contact with Susan Tresman and has asked her to participate in Channel 4 follow up initiatives later on this week. More TV appearances and media quotes are also likely to follow in the wake of this.

BDA has been inundated with responses from individuals telling their stories and we are most grateful to hear about those. We will use them in our responses to the ‘Dyslexia Myth’.
