Project Success

Project Success ~ Prosiect ‘Llwyddiant’, a Wales-wide collaborative project between the BDA, Dyscovery Trust and centres of learning and education in Wales, completed its aims in March 2008.

Project Success, funded through the European Social Fund, launched in December 2004 to focus on re-engaging young, disaffected learners, aged between 13 and 19. The aim was to get young learners back into education and training through use of ICT interventions and assistive technologies. In the five years since its inception, over 1,600 young people in Wales have benefited from the project.

39 learning centres, including Secondary Schools, Colleges, Pupil Referral Units, Princes Trust Teams, University Summer Schools and the Juvenile Detention Sector, across Wales, actively participated in Project Success. These centres have been provided with wide ranging suite of assistive technology and ICT learning resources to support the needs of the recipient and to directly address areas of learning weakness.

The aim was to ensure all the ‘learning centres’ were:

  • Aware of the applications recommended by experts in the field of Specific Learning Difficulty (SPLd).
  • Ensured to have continued access to these applications via appropriate licence negotiations.
  • Provided with a working knowledge and of the latest version of those applications through detailed training.

Thus enabling the learning centre to be able to make an informed decision regarding the purchase of any future assistive technology resources based on their understanding of the software Project Success provided.

In addition, the project has provided a programme of Open College Network (OCN) courses aimed at coaching the recipient through a formal qualification, where appropriate. The programme includes Entry Level Social and Communication Skills and Independent Living Skills. To date, the project has recorded approximately 187 Beneficiaries having achieved an OCN qualification. In addition; where a formal qualification has not been considered appropriate, a further 128 Beneficiaries have made use of the OCN workbooks provided to help achieve learning goals.
