Dyslexia Friendly Schools Pack

My predecessor, David Blunkett wrote the foreword to the original Achieving Dyslexia Friendly Schools pack and I am very happy to provide a similar introduction to this, the fifth edition of the pack.

It is a mark of the success of this pack that it has run to five editions in a relatively short space of time. I am confident that this new edition, revised and updated will be similarly well received.

When dyslexia goes unrecognised it can be the source of unhappiness, frustration and underachievement for the child concerned. It can be a significant barrier to progress and needs to be tackled. We know that the effects of dyslexia can be alleviated by early identification and appropriate teaching strategies deployed inn a dyslexia friendly teaching environment. I therefore welcome this guidance which has been drawn up by the British Dyslexia Association based on their extensive knowledge of the problems faced by dyslexic pupils and the strategies that have helped them.

The thrust of this guidance is very much in line with the Government’s Strategy for Special Educational Needs Removing Barriers to Achievement published in February 2004. The Strategy aims to remove the barriers to learning that can get in the way of children with SEN making the most of their time at school. It emphasises the importance of identifying children’s needs as soon as possible and providing the right support geared to individual needs. The practical ideas contained in this pack also reinforce guidance provided through the National Primary Strategy in relation to the literacy and numeracy needs of children with SEN, including dyslexic pupils.

I comment the pack to schools and local education authorities.
